Educational Technology to Practice

The technology supports my
pedagogy in one main way. It will allow me to keep accurate records while
assessing students in a meaningful way. Sometimes, recording assessments gets
in the way of the actual assessment and affects the results. Using a tablet
will allow me to have quick access to assessments and records without getting
in the way of teaching.
While the use of a tablet will
not directly affect the content of my lessons or the curriculum, it will allow
me to focus more on my teaching of that content and the student learning. For
this particular situation, the technology does not affect the content, except
that it makes it easier for me to teach and record assessments.
The idea of this solution is that
students will notice it less. This will allow me to have my class files that I
need open and ready for the day so that I will be able to seamlessly assess
students. For instance, if I am assessing singing voice, I can simply have the
students lead the class in a song and I can jot down notes while I play the
piano without them being any the wiser. This will not be used for one specific
lesson, but daily. It is difficult to show the pedagogy and content knowledge
because this is not geared toward one specific lesson, but daily activities.

ReplyDeleteI think that the idea of using a tablet computer to track student progress and for assessment is such a wise, forward-thinking idea. It allows you to keep track of your students without toting around a ream of paper and then forgetting where your notes for which classes are located. I like how you note that this will not directly affect your content. It won't affect your content, but it will affect how you monitor the content you teach. I am anxious to hear how you are able to integrate this into your teaching. :^)
Tai, this technology will alleviate your hard copy system of keeping track of students and will likely prove to be a more accurate representation of your student's achievements. You will be able to assess and see learning trends by using a tablet for keeping grades and notes. This is especially relevant for you as a music teacher. Most of your assessing likely happens by observations or checklists so an efficient system for you to accomplish keeping records is important.

Tai,
ReplyDeleteI agree that recording grading really can get in the way of the actual assessment! When I was teaching 5th grade last year, some of the grading became so overwhelming that for some assignments I began to grade as a pass or fail- either you did it or you didn't. This was because our grading system was so complex- I can't even begin to explain all the steps required except that it basically called for a teacher grading a paper 3 times over before it was official in the system. It was soooooo tiring!! I definitely had some ideas for a new grading system (had my school allowed me to stray away from their daunting system). If your school gives you the freedom to use your own grading system, I think it's excellent that you are using the technology to become more efficient. Kudos for tackling this project!
